How does VAT work?
Every time value is added to a product and a sale is made, VAT is collected. This is how the term “value-added tax” (VAT) came to be. It’s meant to be paid for at the end by the customer. Here’s a case in point:
A badminton racquet costs C$120 from a supplier to a store. They owe the government C$20 in VAT.
Because the government reimburses the retailer C$20, the shop does not have to pay VAT.
The consumer pays C$220 for the racket, which is sold by the store. The customer, as the final consumer, is responsible for paying the whole C$44 in VAT to the store.
The shop will have to pay C$24 to the government in addition to the reclaimable C$20 VAT.
