A new VAT registration number format is available for Ireland

Updated on July 18, 2022

This article explains a new VAT registration number format that Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 offers for Ireland.

More information

The new format registration number has been assigned to all Irish companies, trusts, partnerships, and unincorporated bodies registered after January 1, 2013.

The new numbers have a nine-character format, with seven numeric and two alphanumeric characters. Second alpha character in the new PPSN is “A” for individuals, and “H” for non-individual circumstances (for example, Limited Companies, Trusts, Partnerships and Unincorporated Bodies), for example 1234567FA (for example, 1234567WH). Use Modulus 23 to calculate the alpha character at 8 as a check character.

Please note that existing PPSNs/Tax registration numbers will remain untouched and continue to function as they have for the past many years.

When the Check tax exempt number functionality is enabled for Country/Region, the tax exempt number will follow the validation format standards.

Legislative enum type includes a new enum type called Tax ID, which is useful for tracking the tax IDs of Legal entities across countries.

Standard validation can be enabled in tax registration types by entering IE#######&& as the format mask, or by leaving it blank and relying on Ireland-specific implementation rules.
