Which one of the following substances would be the least soluble in CCl4?

A) CH3CH2OH

B) H2O

C) NH3

D) C10H22

E) NaCl

I know that the “likes dissolves likes.” CCl4 is nonpolar. The answer cannot be D sinc C10H22 is also non polar so it would dissolve in CCl4. Other than that I have no clue what to do

  • NaCl due to ionic bonding is least soluble. CCl4 is non polar so there would be no tendency for such a non polar molecule to be able to cause NaCl to be dissociated into separate ions.
